What Size Skip Do I Need?

So, you’ve got a lot of waste to get rid of. You might have emptied out your garage or loft of years’ worth of accumulated junk; removed an old kitchen or bathroom ready for a new one to be installed; or even cleared your overgrown garden of weeds, dead trees, soil and much else.

Either way, it’s far too much to take to the tip in your car, so getting a skip for it seems by far the best solution. But this is where a lot of inexperienced people can easily get confused, because there are a lot of skips to choose from.

Here at CSH Environmental, we have nine different skip sizes available, from 4 yard skips that can hold up to about 40 or 45 filled black bin bags to huge 40 yard containers that can hold over 400. How do you go about selecting the right one for your amount and type of waste?

What Size Skip Do I Need?

What should you consider when choosing a skip?

Amount of waste: We provide rough guides – based on the number of filled black bin bags they can hold – to help you estimate the capacity of each of our available skips. It’s worth taking time to decide on the right size – get one too big and you’ll end up paying more than you need to, while if you get one that’s too small you might need to hire an extra one to take the rest of your waste.

Type of waste: You need to be particularly careful with heavy waste, such as bricks, rubble, concrete and soil. Because most skips need to be lifted onto the back of a lorry, only those up to 8 yards can be safely filled with this type of waste – unless you go up to the really large roll on roll off containers.

Where the skip will be kept: Whether it will be going on your property or on a public road, you need to make sure there’s enough space for the skip you have in mind. You’re unlikely to be allowed to have anything bigger than an 8 yard skip on a public road because of safety concerns.

What Size Skip Do I Need For Home Improvements?

Small home improvement projects may well only need a 4 yard skip to take your waste, but for the average kitchen or bathroom you’ll probably be better off with a 6 yard skip. Large domestic properties with large kitchens and bathroom renovation projects may even need to go up to an 8 yard skip.

A lot of garden waste – such as weeds, turf, branches and twigs – is not only reasonably lightweight, but it can also often be broken down so that you can use more of the available space than is often the case with home improvement projects. That could mean getting away with a smaller skip than you might think. Depending on the size of your garden and how much needs clearing, a 4 or 6 yard skip should be enough.

What is the most popular skip size?

What Is The Most Popular Skip Size?

6 and 8 yard skips are probably the most versatile and therefore the most commonly used skips. Because they can be used for all kinds of waste – including domestic, construction and commercial projects – and are small enough to fit on or close to most properties, these will usually be your safest bet when it comes to skip hire.
