Skip vs Tip: What’s the Best Choice for Your Waste?
Regular household waste can usually be disposed of through the collections provided by local councils. In most areas, provision is made for the collection and disposal of general waste, some recyclable materials and green and food waste.
Modern wheelie bins are big enough to accommodate most of the waste we produce, but every now and then – whether through accumulation over time, a home improvement project or a major clearance – we find ourselves with large quantities of waste we need to dispose of quickly.
At which point, you have to decide the best way of getting rid of it and this choice can usually be summed up as ‘skip or tip?’. In this article, the CSH Environmental team is going to explain when and why skip hire can often be the better option.
Is hiring a skip worth it?
Under many circumstances, hiring a skip has significant advantages over taking waste to the tip. These include:
Convenience
Using a skip is often by far the quicker and easier solution – you just throw your waste into it as you go, and then we come and collect it when you’ve finished. Job done.
Taking your waste to the tip in the car, however, can be a slow and laborious task. It may involve numerous trips, and chances are you’ll have to give the inside of your car a good clean afterwards as well. Plus, many councils are now limiting how often you can use their tip or recycling centre, so you may not be able to get rid of it all anyway!
Quantity of waste
The more waste you have, the more reason for hiring a skip. After all, you can only fit so much waste into even the biggest car. Skips, on the other hand, come in a wide range of sizes to suit domestic, commercial and construction needs. Check out the skip sizes we have available and see how much waste you’re likely to be able to get rid of when using them before picking the right one for your needs.
Type of waste
We’ve already referred to the mess you can make of the inside of your car when ferrying waste to the tip, but some types of waste are inevitably going to make more of a mess than others. For instance, garden waste can not only mean mud and grit getting into every nook and cranny but you might also potentially end up with lots of unpleasant creepy-crawlies in there as well!
Environmental impact
As licensed waste carriers, CSH Environmental has to meet stringent rules and regulations regarding how we get rid of the waste we collect. On average, we recycle over 99% of it, meaning that when you use our skip hire services, you have the confidence of knowing that your waste will be disposed of responsibly and won’t end up in landfill or damaging the environment.
You can find out more about what happens to your waste when you hire one of our skips in our previous article.
How much does a skip cost?
The cost of hiring a skip can vary greatly depending on what size you need, where you live and whether you’ll need a permit to put it on the road. If you’re in our area – which is in and around Colchester, Chelmsford and Ipswich – you can view current prices and order your skip online or call us to get a cost-effective quotation.
