Garden Waste Clearance Guide
Spring has officially arrived, and that means gardeners up and down the country will be looking forward to being outside and getting their gardens in order ready for the summer.
That can mean clearing overgrown areas, raking up the leaves that fell in the autumn, trimming branches from trees and bushes, weeding, and even digging up whole plants that are no longer as fresh and attractive as they once were.
All that work can generate a lot of waste, especially if you have a large garden or it has been allowed to run wild for longer than it should have. In this article, we’re going to explain why hiring a skip to get rid of all that waste might just be the best solution.
Why choose skip hire for garden waste?
Quite simply, the more garden waste you generate, the harder it’s going to be to dispose of. Obviously, the food and garden waste bin collected by the council won’t hold much. You could take it to the tip in the car, but it could mean several journeys and that could seriously impact the amount of time you have available to actually work in the garden. And don’t even think about what kind of mess the car would be in by the time you’ve finished!
A skip, on the other hand, can be loaded as you go, so the waste isn’t lying around in your garden, getting in the way and representing an increasingly significant trip hazard. It also means all your available time can go towards clearing your garden rather than wasting time driving to and from the tip and potentially queueing when you get there as well.
What garden waste can be disposed of in a skip?
Pretty much everything you dig and sweep up or cut and chop down should be able to go in your skip. All plants, branches, twigs, leaves, weeds, turf and other vegetable matter can be included, because they can all be used to create green energy and organic fertiliser through a process known as anaerobic digestion. The only exceptions to this rule are large tree trunks and tree roots.
If you’ve really gone mad with your garden clearance and have paving slabs, bricks and soil that you need to dispose of, the good news is that we can take these as well. Just be careful about how much, because the weight can affect the balance of the skip when we come to take it away.
You can even put in old electrical items such as lawnmowers, strimmers and other tools, as long as they don’t have rechargeable batteries in them.
What garden waste can’t be disposed of in a skip?
You need to be particularly careful if your garden clearance involves sorting out a shed or other storage areas. That’s because the waste might include hazardous materials – such as chemicals and old gas bottles – that can’t go in our skips.
As already mentioned, tree roots and large trunks are also not allowed – just give us a call if you’re unsure about what can and can’t go in your skip.
How to load a garden waste skip
Try to break down the waste as much as possible before placing it in your skip; this will allow you to fit in more, as large branches might block access to the bottom of the skip that could then become wasted space. Any heavy items, such as paving slabs, bricks and soil should go at the bottom of the skip as that will make it safer for us to lift and load onto our truck when we come to collect it.
